Fast-growing 85+ age group looking to live comfortably, safely

Are you 85 or older? If so, you may be surprised to discover that you are now part of one of the fastest-growing population groups in Canada. According to the 2021 census, your cohort of 861,000 Canadians increased by 12% from the previous census in 2016. That’s also more than twice the number reported in the 2001 census. Your age group now represents 2.3% of Canada’s population.

Other interesting statistics on older Canadians from the 2021 census:

  • 在未来25年(到2046年),85岁及以上的人口可能会增加两倍,达到近250万人。
  • Canada now has over 9,500 centenarians — a 16% increase from 2016.
  • While women still outnumber men, the ratio of women to men among people aged 85 and older is decreasing.*

According to Statistics Canada, the 85+ group also has unique health care and housing needs that will require a range of solutions: “An increasing number are no longer living in private dwellings and need different types of housing options, such as seniors’ residences at first, and nursing care facilities as they get older,” Statistics Canada reports.

Currently, more than 25% of those 85+ live in a collective dwelling, including seniors’ residences. This percentage increases with age.*

现在,退休住宅比以往任何时候都更适合加拿大老年人,不仅是那些85岁以上的人,也包括那些六七十岁的人。这有几个原因。

What does aging in place mean?

“Aging in place” is a term often heard regarding seniors who wish to stay in their own homes as long as possible. Retirement living, because of its continuum-of-care approach, is one way for older adults to enjoy a rich, full and active life on their own terms. Optional supports, such as世界杯2022赛程时间表最新 , mean peace of mind for seniors and their families.

Dr. Amy D’Aprix, a gerontological social worker, describes retirement living: “There is a home-like environment that is safe, provides meals and housekeeping, as well as the opportunity to socialize and have friends right where you live…I believe the goal is to “age at home,” with home being defined as somewhere we choose to live that feels safe, nurturing, and allows us to continue to explore life and be engaged with others.”
